Our Approach to Martial Arts

At Huntingdon Karate Academy, we take a well-rounded, student-centered approach to martial arts education. All of our instructors are experienced black belts (Dan holders) recognized by Grandmasters in South Korea, and each is committed to helping students grow both on and off the mat.

Our goal is to help students strengthen not only their physical health and self-defense skills, but also their character, mental well-being, and interpersonal relationships—all through the values deeply rooted in traditional Korean martial arts.

We also place importance on the shared history between Korean Tang Soo Do and Japanese Shotokan Karate, especially during the early 20th century. Understanding this connection offers valuable insight into the techniques, forms, and philosophies that shaped modern martial arts—and fosters a deep appreciation for how different cultures have contributed to the martial traditions we study today.

What We Teach

Our curriculum provides a balanced blend of physical skill, cultural knowledge, and personal development. Students gain experience in:

  • The history and evolution of martial arts, including Tang Soo Do and its Shotokan influences

  • Korean history and cultural values

  • Martial arts philosophy and traditional virtues

  • Korean Tang Soo Do terminology

  • Etiquette, rules, and class procedures

  • The belt ranking system and goal-setting

  • Fundamental techniques: stances, strikes, blocks, and kicks

  • Practical self-defense training

  • Traditional forms (Hyung / Kata)

  • Belt testing preparation and progress tracking

  • Basic first aid awareness

  • Weapons training (for advanced students only)

A Culture of Lifelong Learning

One of the core principles we emphasize is this: we are all lifelong students. There is great value—and challenge—in learning how to learn. At Huntingdon Karate Academy, we recognize that each student learns differently. That’s why we strive to teach in a way that is clear, inclusive, and adaptable to various learning styles.

We actively encourage students to ask questions, offer ideas, and contribute to class discussions. This helps create a positive and collaborative learning environment where growth, curiosity, and respect go hand in hand.
